Lesson Overview

Our minds have evolved to help us navigate through the complexities of life. It wants to find and solve problems. While traditional mindfulness is helpful, a new approach may be better aligned for those with active minds. For this first lesson, we will tap into our imagination to help us create our own tools for practicing mindfulness as a starting point for calming the mind.

Guided Meditation

This meditation helps you envision an inner “field of awareness” as a serene natural landscape in your imagination that symbolizes an open perception. You’ll also visualize a simple one-room cabin within this landscape, represented as the "cabin of concentration." By focusing on and transitioning between the expansive surroundings and the cabin, the meditation fosters a balance between broad awareness and concentrated attention that you can use anytime you want to practice mindfulness.

Mindfulness Exercises

After you finish the guided meditation, try an exercise below that you believe will be most helpful for you!

AI Mindfulness Coach

You can ask our AI Mindfulness Coach (link here) to help you apply the Adaptive Mindfulness concepts of Field of Awareness and Cabin of Concentration, so you can navigate a challenging situation that you experienced. The more descriptive you are of the situation you experienced, the better the AI Coach’s responses will be.

Journal Reflections

  • What states of being would you like to have more of in your life? (e.g., peace, joy, gratitude, acceptance)

  • Why are these states important?

  • How could tapping into your Inner Refuge empower you to experience these desired states more often?

Mindful Moments

  • Take five slow breaths while visualizing stepping onto the porch of your imagined cabin at any moment you want to balance concentration with expansive awareness

  • While you are going to sleep, try to imagine the calm of your Inner Refuge to help you fall asleep
