Lesson Overview

Technology is pervasive in our lives—some times unlocking incredible possibilities and at other times our greatest source of distractions. It’s easy to lose sight of how technology shapes not only our society, but also our personal emotions, thoughts, and sensations. Adaptive mindfulness offers a way to step back, reflect, and intentionally reshape this relationship. By becoming more aware of how we connect and disconnect, we can find balance. We can use technology in ways that align with our values and desirable states of being.

Guided Meditation

This meditation focuses on examining the sensations and impressions associated with technology, especially how we use our phones. You will be guided to visualize interacting with your phone and notice the emotional responses that arise. Through this awareness, this meditation explores what a healthy relationship with technology might look like and helps clarify steps to better align technology use with inner peace.

Mindfulness Exercises

After you finish the guided meditation, try an exercise below that you believe will be most helpful for you!

Journal Reflections

  • What does a healthy relationship with technology mean to you?

  • How do you think your technology use has impacted your inner peace and (conversely) your stress levels during the past month?

  • What specific changes could you make to align your phone and technology usage with your personal values?

Mindful Moments

  • Pause before picking up your phone and take three slow breaths, noticing your intentions for using it.

  • Spend a few minutes reorganizing your phone's apps to make it more conducive to inner peace and mindfulness.

  • During a phone-free moment, reflect on how it feels to disconnect and be present with your surroundings.
